inRetroSpect
I have decided not to develop inRetroSpect anymore as a Windows executable. It has gone just about as far as I can imagine bar rewriting it. I am quite interested in learning more about developing Web applications and that is what I hope to do with inRetroSpect. I want to change it to using a SQL Server database rather than an Access one and have it so that anyone can access it and recommend updates from this site. I am doing this to purely learn how to write a Web App using ASP pages.
Amendment 07/05/2006:
The amendment mentioned
above is now much more than a work in progress.
The development with ASP I felt was a great success personally but with
the better development tools available (i.e. Visual Studio .NET (currently
2005)) to myself I have been able to make even further progress. I have grown
in confidence with the structure of the site with this and it will soon be
available; I’m just waiting to decide a few things:
1. The name of the site and where it should
be hosted (any recommendations for the site name are readily accepted).
2. What downloads should be available
(if any at all). I think not, due to the
minefield that is providing Roms/snapshots emulation-wise. I would do this but it means going through a
database of 7000+ games.
3. The main page structure. I don’t want it to just be a search engine.
The Windows executable will always be available and can be downloaded here.
If you do not have a Microsoft database program (Access, SQL Server, MSDE) installed on your PC then you will need to install the Jet Engine components. The self-extracting file is available here.
